We have had this house for 11 years. 2 years ago we had the architect Brian Mccarthy design our addition which includes an amazing spacious designer/chefs kitchen. That is a wok burner and a high intensity chefs cook top. Tucked around the corner is a stainless counter with extra deep double sinks, a slate counter, and a bowling alley floor island table (you can see the lane markers). Cove ceilings (see the ceiling below), top of the line appliances, mini-beverage fridge to keep the kids/party out of the chef's way, and a place for a couch so people sit and talk while you cook...we love life in this room!

Insider info :: details you won't think to ask::
| pin hole leaks |
Every house in this whole region has them and we were plagued with leaks just like all our neighbors. so we had ALL our pipes redone with our major renovation 2 years ago. If the house you are buying has not done this...add about 4-7k to your budget to replace the pipes. Montgomery county + D.C. actually tried to sue the water company because so many homes were having this problem...but that is another long story. |
| ipe deck |
We took out all pressure treated wood from out yard (play set and existing deck) and put in this ridiculously expensive mahogany outside.
We took the "arsenic treated wood " out for our children's health. If you do buy a house with a pressure treated deck, read this and then tear it down. You can budget about 6-13k to rebuild a deck with a product that will not give your family cancer. |
| electricity |
Upgraded. Extended to the shed. And upgraded for the office upstairs. Also, if you are an artist/craftsperson and want to use the basement for a studio, it has updated electric work and 240 volts for a kiln or BIG energy needing tool and a special sink to trap clay. |
| king of the mountain |
We never realized this until we lived here, but we are the top of the hill. Every house is below us. If you look at the shed above (remember to complement john), then you will notice that we look down on everything and those are the neighbor's roof tops we see. Much nicer than having houses look down on you. or drain their water down into your basement! mostly it is an aesthetic thing....you don't really see/hear your neighbors below...just their tree tops. Our backyard is my retreat. |
| why Takoma Park? |
At the tip of the D.C. diamond, on the redline that goes over to NIH and bethesda, our house in Takoma Park is a bike ride (10 minutes) or a 7 minute drive or free shuttle-bus ride to University of Maryland (where john works), a 15 minute drive
to the steps of the capital, 15
minute metro ride right into the reagan national airport. there is a montogmery county ride-on bus stop 1/2 block away.
In addition to the central locale, we chose Takoma Park because
it has the reputation of a liberal
infested, literary,
artsy, family friendly, green community. From it's farmer's market, poet laurete and jazz-band brawl to the annual folk festival, this self-proclaimed "nuclear-free" city has a core of values we want to live around. Think Berkley of the east. And don't drive your nuclear waste thru our streets!

school's rule |
Montgomery county residents allocate more money for education. and have over long periods of time. So the schools are reputed to have more resources than any other school system around. From numerous magnet programs (from aerospace to communication arts) to specialized special needs (hearing, learning, ad etc) programs, this school system offers astounding resources and support.

| play play play |
Below is Takoma Park's sligo creek...one block away from our house. There is a playground, basketball court, and stream there as well. |
